Down the memory lane 

Kausar Iqbal established Creative Designers Crafts, CdCrafts in 1987 to teach handicraft courses to young women in Pakistan. Initially offering silk painting, cold porcelain, candle-making, hand & ribbon embroidery, and as the first sole distributor for TriChem®USA paints in the region, the organization worked extensively in developing and less privileged areas of Karachi and Pakistan. The evolving mission of CdCrafts was to educate ladies who were creative but couldn’t leave home to earn for the family. So we developed talented teams of artisans and crafters.

The organization’s fundamental focus was to revive traditional crafts by focusing on age-old concepts, such as home furnishing and women’s apparel. Our efforts were successful to such an extent that hundreds of ladies started establishing private institutes in the late 1990s, giving rise to a mushrooming crafts industry. This opened up potential revenue-streams to aspiring ladies and craftswomen, but it also eventually resulted in saturation within the market. CdCrafts then started a parallel project called ‘the Wedding Planner.’ Catering to styled wedding themes the concept was formulated to target busy wedding seasons of Pakistan: providing wedding accessories, party favors made from cold porcelain, handmade boxes and arrangement of wedding stages. Again, the core team comprised of studious women who were willing to learn and give a strong backbone to the company – a slew of copycats, again, took over the market, forcing CdCrafts to diversify its portfolio further.

CdCrafts started producing high-quality hand embroidery and other embellishments on fabric, setting high standards to create a unique niche in the fashion accessories segment. Our efforts, aided by the Export Promotion Bureau of Pakistan, saw us showcase designer beaded bags and hand-painted scarves / ties at the Bangladesh Expo Exhibition 2009 and at Expo Pakistan 2007. Almost all the fabric used was exclusively designed silk and cotton, woven on hand-looms, hand-dyed and hand-embellished with beads, crystal, sequins and stones. The art of block-printing had been left neglected for many years, with skills not being transferred to the next generation – tie dye on cotton too, had almost entirely become mechanized by factory printed cloth. CdCrafts successfully introduced such arts at a workshop in the Machara (fishermen) colony. Over the years, through all of its diversification processes, CdCrafts emphasized the virtues of ‘simplicity and tradition’ – the hallmarks of our products are embellishments using the best traditional available material. East World Market is a sister company that was born out of the legacy of CdCrafts. EWM has positioned itself to be distributor globally of handicrafts that originate from Pakistan. These products shall be of high standard and exported abroad, extending to buyers in the USA, Dubai and Canada through exhibitions, social media (e.g. Facebook) and a functioning E-commerce enabled website .Whilst CdCrafts is an active member of the Pakistan ,USA &Bahrain business community and participates actively in different exhibitions arranged by the Trade Corporation of Pakistan (Bangladesh, Dubai, USA, Canada, and London), East World Market, as a USA entity, was nominated as featured seller on smashion.com.
